Daniel Whelan

Daniel Whelan

Principal

I started my career working in mainstream secondary schools in the South East and London where I spent some 10 years as a Head of PE, Head of Year and Head of House. I moved to Exeter and continued working in mainstream settings until the opportunity to work at what was then CDPLS as a Deputy Head Teacher was offered to me in June 2014. I had been Acting Principal since March 2015 until December 2015 when I was appointed as Principal.

Dan Hamer

Dan Hamer

Vice Principal

I have worked in Education for 18 years since leaving the Royal Navy. I teach Maths, Design and Technology and ICT. This has given me a depth of experience in working with students who struggle to access education or who have low self esteem or aspirations. I believe that education is a moral imperative and everyone should have access to a high quality provision, personalised to meet their aspirations and needs. With this in mind my teams will work to identify needs, celebrate good work and further develop an inclusive community.

Assistant Principal/Safeguarding

I have been working in schools for 27 years, most of which was spent in mainstream primary schools. My main interest while in mainstream was working with the children who had additional needs, particularly those with emotional and behavioural difficulties.  After a period as a class teacher, I then worked as a SENCo for about 15 years before making the decision to move to CDPLS in 'January 2012.

Julia Jordan

Julia Jordan

School Business Manager

I am Julia Jordan, the School Business Manager and I manage the non-curriculum areas:  finance, personnel, administration, site issues and health & safety.  I've been working here since 2003 - at that time we were a small centre for 12 students.  There's been lots of changes since then, but our conversion to a sponsored academy is by far the most exciting.

Senior School Leader

I taught Mathematics in secondary schools in the South West for eight years between 2000 and 2008, including four years as a Second in Department.  I then worked as a Mathematics Teacher at the KS4 PRU in Exeter for two years before a promotion to a middle leadership post in the North Devon PRU.  I also studied with the Open University areas such as ‘Inclusive Education’, ‘Researching Mathematics Education’ and ‘Managing Behaviour in Schools’.  These courses led to an ‘Advanced Diploma in Equality and Diversity’ and a ‘Masters Degree in Education’.  In the summer of 2014 I returned to the Exeter PRU service as a Teacher of Mathematics before a promotion to Key Stage 4 Learning and Standards Manager in January 2015.  I see building positive relationships as the key to managing behaviour in schools and enjoy seeing how students develop both socially and academically in their time with us.
Emily Johnston

Emily Johnston

Primary School Leader

I have worked in mainstream primary schools for fifteen years teaching across all Key Stages including Early Years Foundation Stage. During this time I took the role of SENDCo and Key Stage One Leader. Alongside teaching, my main focus was working with individual children to support and develop their social, emotional and behavioural needs. I pride myself on building positive relationships with children to help them achieve their full potential. I am delighted to have joined CDA as the Learning and Standards Manager in Primary since September 2016.
